Students in Herzing’s Health Information Management program will pursue specialized coursework in three areas:

Data Governance

Gain a foundational understanding of database systems, standards for the exchange of healthcare information and skills for managing data in compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.

Revenue Cycle Management

Build knowledge of diagnosis and procedure codes, CPT and HCPCS coding, reimbursement and the revenue cycle process, as well as legal and regulatory issues.

Healthcare Analytics and AI

Develop skills in healthcare data analysis and the critical evaluation of AI-generated information in health information practice.

This program covers:

  • Health data management and the healthcare data lifecycle

  • Medical coding using ICD-CM, ICD-PCS, CPT and HCPCS systems

  • Healthcare reimbursement and revenue cycle management

  • Electronic health records and healthcare information systems

  • Healthcare analytics, statistics and applications of artificial intelligence

  • Professional communication, leadership and critical thinking

  • Privacy, confidentiality, security and the release of protected health information

Certification

Graduates of this program are eligible to take AHIMA's Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification exam. Certification is not a state requirement for employment.

What Will I Learn in Herzing's HIT Associate Degree Program?

This program consists of 60 credits of coursework. It combines general education with health information courses that move from medical terminology and anatomy into coding, reimbursement, analytics and compliance. General education subjects build the writing, math and critical thinking skills you'll use throughout your career.
