Upon completion of this program, you should be able to:

  • Integrate a comprehensive understanding of medical terminology into the practice of surgical technology
  • Apply basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and microbiology as it applies to surgical procedures
  • Demonstrate consistent proficiency in the application of aseptic technique in all aspects of surgical patient care
  • Demonstrate basic competence in the safe and proper use of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with all members of the surgical team
  • Work effectively and respectfully with a diverse population

This hybrid program requires a Diploma in Sterile Processing (or equivalent) for admission and completion of the HESI A2 entrance exam. The curriculum includes hands-on skills labs, clinical practicums with daily preceptor supervision and a clinical capstone. The CST exam administered by the NBSTSA is a requirement for program completion.

The Associate of Science in Surgical Technology program at Herzing University is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA). Upon completion, graduates sit for the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) exam administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). This exam is a requirement for program completion.
